The Third Eye Wizard
This piece has been specially made for Local Projects. It consists on a labyrinth, made out of cardboard boxes(the floor and the sealing will be completely covered by cardboard boxes as well). At the end of this labyrinth, which will be the center of the space, a wizard (played by the artist himself) will be waiting for their visitors to meet him, so, one by one, each visitor once gathered with the wizard, is welcome to ask only one question to him, he doesn’t speak, he just answers the questions through a sheet of paper, with the answer written down on it, in Morse Code. The Morse Code is the only way of communication that this wizard knows, and he kindly asks to each one of the visitors to leave their questions and their answers attached to the walls of the labyrinth once they leave the place, so once they’re on the wall, people can read them and know the answers the wanted to know, in case they were going to ask the same question.
The wizard answers universal questions, not particular questions, so, all the answers can be useful to others, the person that makes the question will remain anonymous forever.
The wizard only communicates himself in Morse Code, because he’s protesting against nowaday’s communication, the third eye’s wizard thinks that we are loosing communication between each other, and as a human beings we must as soon as possible, to come back to yesterday’s communication, which was more personal, without cell phones or internet. The Morse Code is a symbol of how simple communication can be, about how directly and precise we have to be when it comes to ask something in particular. For the wizard, to speak by the phone is a waste of time, therefore, a waste of our nowaday’s communication, thereby, our own life,. The wizard wants to make us understand how precious are the simple messages of life, how meaninful is only one word, like the haikus or the koans.
The labyrinth is the path that the visitor has to follow to meet the unknown, it’s like when we are traveling in a place we don’t know, and we are just about to take a train to a new city, we know that we are hitting somewhere, but we don’t know what will it be at the end of the journey. The wizard is protesting against transportation as well, because the wizard thinks that we have to use more our feet, our legs, our own body, ride bike,s he thinks that slowly we are becoming slaves of a very bad comfort life by taking the subway or spending money in taxis, when walking or riding bikes could be much more better for our lives. The wizard thinks that we are spending too much money in unnecessary things and devices, he thinks that we are dying without even notice it, our heart is getting cold because we’ve already lost the essence of life, so, the labyrinth is a symbol of our passing by in our own life.
For one week, the wizard will be every single day for three hours at the end of the labyrinth, to answer everyone’s questions, after the three hours, he’ll leave. The wizard will be waiting to his visitors placed in a small mattress, in a very comfortable position, wearing a red outfit and a small hat, with the symbol of the third eye on the top of it. The red color symbolizes the blood that we never have to forget that pumps from our heart to the rest of our body.
The purpouse of this installation, is that at the end of the week all the walls of the labyrinth will be completely covered with people’s questions and answers, so, when the visitors enter to the labyrinth, they can read all the questions placed all throughout the labyrinth, by their own translation, there will be sheets of paper before entering the labyrinth, pencils as well, and a complete explanation of the Morse code, with a picture of the third eye symbol, and an explanation of the whole installation as well.
The Third Eye is an installation with a performance within, and it starts when the wizard arrives to the space, till the moment when he leaves.
Everyone is welcome to leave their coments, besides the questions, in a small shelf, placed at the beginning of the labyrinth, in one side of the room.
There will be a special music in the wizard’s room, songs from the ancients, selected by the wizard, the soundtrack will be available for the visitors for only five dollars, that money is the contribution that the artist is giving to the gallery, wich at the end of the project, hopefully can be a lot more than one hundred dollars.
The artist wishes that at the end of this piece of art, everyone’s questions about the universe will be successfully answered so wed can all be able to know the meaning of love, pardon me, the meaning of life.
